I’m not there at the moment but hope the following may help and the DEs may have other things to cope with. The acqua alta in at the moment is unusual but will no doubt be reported as flooding. It will affect people more than normal and I hope not too badly but as a tourist it may not be as bad as you fear.If you are seeing this for the first time or thinking of visiting Venice it’s not always this bad, just makes a good news story. Acqua Alta is shortterm “flooding”. The lagoon is tidal and when tides / weather conditions reach a certain point, normally in the winter, parts of the city are temporarily under water. If you are there at the moment this information may help. The Centro Maree publishes forecasts. Their website says phone lines are down but internet is working.
The front page of the website has a graph showing the forecast this is in Italian but the graph is clear in whatever language and they’ll do whatever they can to keep that updated even if the exceptionally high acqua alta causes more problems than usual. The City Council are prepared for this and put out passerelle (walkways) so the main routes remain open (in this exceptionally high acqua alta some may be taken away for safety - they can float when the water gets too high. A map can be downloaded fromThe apps I normally refer to may not be of use - HiTide Venice is showing bus stops as OK near St Mark’s but although the bus stop is ok (they are often floating pontoons) getting across the square would be an issue.HiTide Venice on the U.K. App Store shows the forecast, places of interest and vaporetto stops with a shoe or boot symbol, Water on the Venice Floor has a map that shows flooded areas in red). The ACTV Facebook page is being regularly updated and they are using the universal language of ticks and crosses. The Venezia Unica tourist Facebook also has updatesStay safe and if you are directed to do something do - this is higher than normal but Venice gets acqua alta every year so they have more experience than us of what works. Remember this is your holiday and you can go home, it’s not as easy if Venice is your home / livelihood so bear with them if things take a bit longer. Allow longer for your journeys. 'What is the difference between Acqua Alta and Flooding?' The event in is of course flooding - caused by sea water.
Flooding is simply excess water in a place where you don't want it:-). You can have flooding in your home because of burst pipes; your house can be flooded if you live near a river which bursts its banks; you can have flooding in the corridors of the building where you live when heavy rain in a thunderstorm runs under the doors because of a blocked drain: I know because it has happened to me!In connection with Venice, I think some people are worried that outsiders will think only of flooding caused by heavy rain, overflowing rivers, etc. Flooding of that type can persist for a long time, of course, because the water may drain away only very slowly. The Venice flood is essentially a storm surge, caused by a combination of spring tides and particular weather conditions and strong winds, which causes an abnormal rise in sea level around the islands. As they are so low-lying and criss-crossed by watercourses directly linked to the sea, they are easily inundated. As the flooding is caused basically by the rising tide, the water level falls again quickly within a few hours after the tide turns.
